The O-ring is a closed ring with a circular cross-section, which is mainly made of an elastic rubber material, the so-called elastomer. The size of the O-ring is defined by its inner diameter (?d1) and cross-section (?d2). The sealing effect of an O-ring placed in a suitable groove is achieved during assembly by changing the shape of the circular cross-section of the ring (d2) elastically to an elliptical profile by compression. The compressed ring seals the joint between the contact elements or surfaces and the bottom of the groove.
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR)
NBR rubber is the most commonly used material for the production of O-rings. O-rings made of this material are resistant to oils (especially hydraulic oils), as well as lubricants, gasoline and other aliphatic hydrocarbons, dilute acids and alkalis. They have excellent physical properties, such as mechanical resistance, high friction resistance, and have a good range of permissible temperatures (-25 °C to +120 °C, for special rubbers up to -45 °C). The NBR material with a hardness of 90 ShA is harder and more resistant to abrasion, it is suitable for use in hydraulic systems and in places where there is movement on the O-ring (moving bearings).
